Plagiarism: How to Cite Sources

Summary
youth
This article provides tips to avoid plagiarism.

The following guidelines on how to cite sources to avoid plagiarism:

  • Whenever you cite a source, remember to mention the author and title, and its genre (book, article, or web page). You can also describe the author if you want your reader to know about the author. If the source is the center of your work, you can add a cross-reference to the beginning or end of the sentence. If you don’t know anything about the author, it is best to mention from where you found the source.
  • When using an author's exact words use quotation marks around all the exact words copied from the source.
  • Cite the source from where you have borrowed information like graphs, data, or tables.
  • While writing a topic, try as much as possible to use your own words – also cite the source of your ideas and thoughts.
  • If unsure whether the information is common knowledge - cite for caution.
  • If you have worked on a collaborative project, you can’t use this paper s for another project or assignment.
